Sketches

I feel like my ability to render is modest but I haven't had much practice at abstraction or stylized drawing so I did some sketchbook studies of Stella Im Hultberg's work which a friend recently showed me.

  1. The subtle addition of color adds the illusion of a modeled form just enough. It doesn't tell too much about the form to detract from the stylized nature of the piece, but just enough to add interest and make the piece more understandable.

  2. The light grey figures vs. the black figure gives the illusion of layering and adds a lot of interest. I love your interpretation of Stella's very stylized figures.

  3. the ability to render is overrated don't worry about it, keep doing what you do, the pull and push of the faint gray and the bold blacks work well with just a hint of a little red color.
