I feel like my ability to render is modest but I haven't had much practice at abstraction or stylized drawing so I did some sketchbook studies of Stella Im Hultberg's work which a friend recently showed me.

- I am originally from Southern Ohio and I am studying painting at Indiana Wesleyan University. I occasionally do performance painting for my friends band 'The La De Les'. I believe that painting has the ability to show us things we've never see before and even help us live truths we never knew existed.
The subtle addition of color adds the illusion of a modeled form just enough. It doesn't tell too much about the form to detract from the stylized nature of the piece, but just enough to add interest and make the piece more understandable.
ReplyDeleteThe light grey figures vs. the black figure gives the illusion of layering and adds a lot of interest. I love your interpretation of Stella's very stylized figures.
ReplyDeletethe ability to render is overrated don't worry about it, keep doing what you do, the pull and push of the faint gray and the bold blacks work well with just a hint of a little red color.
